A Prayer Concerning the Gulf Oil Disaster
O Lord, you have bound us together in the web of life and made us stewards of your creation.Keep us mindful that our common life depends upon each other’s toil, and upon the industry and honesty of our fellow workers. Strengthen and guide all who seek to end the flow of Deepwater Horizon oil into the sea; all who labor to clean the waters, animals and wetlands; all who search for explanations of why this catastrophe happened; and, especially those whose jobs and way of life are so profoundly threatened.Make us mindful of their needs, both material and spiritual; grateful for their resilience; and, faithful in our encouragement of them. Give us deeper wisdom and heightened reverence so to use the abundance of your creation that no one suffers from our abuse of it, that generations to come may never cease to praise you for your bounty. Let your redemptive purposes work through us to build a cleaner, better, and more just order of life, for the blessing of your people and the glory of your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
